Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
