Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
